Did you know that sheep have rectangular pupils? Apparently they will become round in very low light, and peanut shaped in very bright light, but the width of the pupil does not change. It is suggested that the wide pupil helps with peripheral vision since a sheep is a prey animal.
Oops, forgot to change the white balance:(

I love sheep and goat eyes. Are they the only mammals that have eyes like that?
ReplyDeleteAnoher lovely shot!
ReplyDeleteRYKER - Most prey animals have eyes like that, so they can see danger coming. From sheep to gazelles.
Thanks Ruth, I think you're right. Horses have them too. Weird, I've owned horses for 35+ years, and never really noticed the rectangular pupils. I think because the iris is usually darker than a sheep's, and the pupil doesn't stand out the same. And did you know that horses have the largest eyes of any land mammal?
ReplyDeleteWhen I googled prey animals eye pupils, one witty character commented that they were ahead of the curve on conversion to HD:)
Great eye..but I like the lashes and that ear too:)
ReplyDeleteVery cool. Who knew?!
